The Jim Scheibel & Tim Wood Food and Humanity Center
We are proud to announce that the Cathedral Center’s signature Food Bank has recently been named the Jim Scheibel and Tim Wood Food and Humanity Center. Jim and Tim are recognized for their tireless work in creating food security in the desert. Their support is crucial because Cathedral Center’s food bank has grown significantly and the need for nutrition in the desert is in high demand.
Started in 1998
The Food Bank began in 1998. Today, we provide over 10,000 pounds of food each week to more than 200 low-income, unhoused, underserved, or food insecure families. Our well-established, shopping style model focuses on independence, dignity, and individual preference while providing free groceries for struggling seniors and their families in Cathedral City and greater Coachella Valley. In addition, Cathedral Center prepares bags of emergency groceries to be handed out to walk-ins on an as-needed basis. Two types of bags are prepared, one for individuals who have access to a kitchen and one for individuals who do not.
It Takes a Village
Cathedral Center partners with FIND Food Bank, Trader Joe’s, Von’s, Starbuck’s, Grocery Outlet, Crumbl Cookie, McDonalds, Krispy Kreme, Eddie V’s, and other local businesses to provide the widest selection of name brand, fresh, shelf-stable, and other nutritious foods in the most dignified shopping experience in the valley. We share any excess food with other food banks throughout the desert.
Monthly food drives are held through Dinners with Patsi fundraising events and donations of food and funds are accepted year-round.
It’s all about humanity
Dignity and humanity is what makes our food bank different. We offer a personalized shopping experience staffed by over 20 volunteers whose goal it is to make everyone comfortable. And, we focus on humanity because we know nutrition is not the only issue our shoppers face. We also provide access to the social services that people are in need of. We have bilingual volunteers there to answer questions, provide resources and make referrals if needed.
